SuperSport United Soccer Schools has found a new home at Marks Park.
Heading the club in Emmarentia, is coach Mike Hughes, who has a passion for soccer. Hughes explained that his love for the sport began at a very young age and in his youth he played against some of the best players of that time.
“I travelled to the United States years ago and coached an all-girl junior high team. I know that there is no difference between coaching boys and girls, it all boils down to passion for what you do,” said Hughes. The club’s mission is to develop South African football through nurturing young talent from grassroots level.
“People seem to think that the development of young soccer stars starts when they are 15 years old; we like to think development starts at the age of four where we help the individual reach their potential as they train,” explained Hughes.
“Whether the player just wants to excel at school, or one day play for our national team we help them excel so they can achieve their goals,” said Hughes.
He added, “I love young players; the younger the better; all they want to do is learn and play the sport; they want to improve and absorb all the information you give them,” he enthused.
Recently the club hosted a full fixture of Futbol de Salão (futsal) games. There, the Nedbank Cup, of which SuperSport United are the current holders, was also on display to encourage the young players to strive for their football dreams.
“Players from as young as four years old attended and demonstrated their skill and technique as well as their passion for the beautiful game,” said Hughes. He concluded that passion and the correct attitude will take any player very far.
